sunset bbq @ yuigahama beach

Today's #flashback friday heads back to Yuigahama Beach in Kanagawa for a BBQ planned by my  good friends Chico and Eri.

sunset bbq @ yuigahama beach

True to form, rain is nearly always waiting for me in Shonan, haha. By the time we got to Yuigahama beach, the rain had started and we walked to the "beach house" with t-shirts and towels draped about our heads. Why Kanagawa? Why do you always rain on me?!

The beach house that Chico and Eri rented out was really nice. The interesting thing about "beach houses" and restaurants in Shonan, is that they're really not houses at all, more like outdoor lounges and restaurants. To top it off, they change every year! They go up and go down over the course of the summer and are reincarnated as something totally new the next year. Which is pretty cool.

One thing I don't love, however, is their massive NO TATTOO rule. I get that Japan isn't as forgiving regarding tattoos and I can understand it in onsen and water parks, but at the beach? It's kind of like the last bastion of freedom and water sport. I really hope that rule gets a lot more lax in the following years.

That being said, Yuigahama Beach is beautiful and I love seeing the mountains and hills roll right up to the beach; it was an amazing end of summer day to spend with some of the best friends I'd made in Japan and enjoy one of my favorite areas of Kanagawa before leaving.

silent hills of enoshima

Welcome to my first Travel Tuesday! I'm not including a lot of my more day-to-day Japan posts in this category because well, it was my home for five years so to me they're still more of a daily thing. Big travel places, however, like Enoshima, Nikko, etc get their own special spotlights :)

enoshima with miss anna

I've been to Enoshima a few times, but this time I had the chance to go with the lovely Miss Anna! We'd met up for the first time in person the year before when we conquered Flower Market Teahouse, and this time around we went on an all-out nonstop pilgrimage of DSLR shots, Instagram worthy cafes, and lots and lots of food. I'll have a separate post for that, but for now our day trip to Enoshima.

And I should mention, a very, very rainy Enoshima. After a short breakfast at Bills in Omotesando, we hopped on the train for a brief stop in Kamakura.

Floresta Donuts is a must! I'm guessing they change seasonally, but these were almost too cute too eat :3 Almost. After some donuts (and possibly more coffee?) we hopped on the train again bound for Enoshima. The closer we got, the darker the sky got, and the more my spirits sank. Why?

Murphy's Law: It must rain every time (READ: EVERY TIME) I go to Enoshima. I don't have one single sunny day shot on this island. Like ever. In five years. WHAT'S UP WITH THAT.

Regardless of the ominous rain clouds, Enoshima was packed! I mean, impossibly. Neither of us had much patience for crowds that day so we made our way to the top of the island the back way. Never done that before so it required a lot more trial and error as we made our way through the narrow streets that zigzagged back and forth between the houses, but getting to the top unhindered by massive crowds was so worth it.

And those cats! I'm still incredibly new to photography, but I'm pretty proud of those cat pictures, especially the dark striped one! Though I'd probably never be able to do that again, haha.

The top of Enoshima--and well, most of the Enoshima and and Kamakura area really--is well-known for it's 鳶 or hawks. I'm 1000% not a fan of birds and even less so after I saw a hawk dive down and steal a man's croquette in Kamakura, but they do look pretty cool circling among the trees-laden cliffs. And honestly, despite the rain making for a very humid hike, misty Enoshima is actually really beautiful.

If not just a teeny bit reminiscent of Silent Hill.

The last part of our hike brought us to the southwestern side of the island and Iwaya Cave. I'd managed to miss the caves every time so far and even though I was happy I'd finally made it inside, it was a bit disappointing to be honest. Everything else about Enoshima is so authentic; the old, slightly ramshackle buildings, the lush forest, and lenient guardrails, but the cave was so....manufactured. Still worth checking out just not what I expected.

I really recommend Uomitei! I'd always wanted to eat at one of the restaurants that overlooked the water and this one, in my opinion, has the best views. If you're a seafood fan, try the Enoshima-don!

And if you see this post and end up visiting (or have visited) any of these places, leave me a comment and tell me how you liked it!

make my day

Somehow, I got really lucky and was able to see almost all of my friends' bands one last time before I left, including Make My Day! I'd met Sam, Nori, and Julian a few years earlier when they were in their previous bands (Remembering Sensation and Ashley Scared the Sky) and on top of having some pretty awesome heavy music, they're all super nice guys, too.

Do I know any mean musicians? I dunno. Everyone was always pretty chill XD

Anyway, Landon was going to help me shoot an interview so we stopped at Saku-Saku Maple Shou for that decadent masterpiece you can see up there, so good, holy mother of pastries.

We shot an interview with the guys, but unfortunately we never finished it. Hopefully we'll get around to it one day though because it's pretty hilarious. The show itself was great, too! I'm always happy to see girugamesh as they used to be my favorite band once upon a time, and MMD never disappoint either. Always heavy, always wild, always great.

I also met Laura for the first time! She's a sweetheart and a half and she has a pretty awesome blog, too so check it out! I'm glad we finally got to meet over music and taco rice :)

I was thinking that putting up the addresses might make my blog a bit more useful? I may not be in Japan anymore, but if people stumble on this blog I'd like to be able to provide some more options for eats and entertainment besides Sukiya and Gusto, haha.  Hopefully it's helpful?

glorious chain cafe

Soon before leaving, I asked my friend Reimi, a stylist at Breen Tokyo, if she could style my hair and take some more professional headshots for my resume. This was followed by yakitori, drinks, and more sweets than one should consume in one sitting :D

Thanks for the hairdo, Reimi!

From the salon, Reimi and I made our way to Shibuya (with a pit stop at Cinnabon on the way) to meet our friend Don-chan, (Take Amublance) and T.J. (Her Name in Blood). After drinks and yakitori (because you can never have enough chicken on a stick) we headed over to Diesel's Glorious Chain Cafe to meet up with Julian (Make My Day) and tattoo artist Yomi.

This night was so fun and one of those times where I found myself realizing how much I would miss walking between Shibuya and Omotesando and just running into friends. I remember the first time I met each one of these people and sitting there having wine and cheese with everyone and splitting decadent pancakes with Don-chan, I realized how much I would miss them.

Anyway! Things you should check out next time you're in TKY:
Yomi's tattoos (He did my first one!)
Her Name in Blood
Breen Tokyo
Take Ambulance (Unfortunately, they've disbanded but still good!)
Make My Day
Glorious Chain Cafe

Let's all meet up again someday! Atlanta or Tokyo, haha :)
